Blasting and Coatings

Why Abrasive Blasting and Coatings?

  1. Abrasive Blasting
    • is needed because of the need for proper surface cleanliness and surface profiles called Surface Preparation.
    • surface preparation is key to the performance of a coating system.
    • if a coating system has a poor foundation (surface preparation) it will fail sooner than expected; or it can fail catastrophically within a short time after its application.
  1. Surface preparation creates a foundation providing two important factors for long life of coatings:
    (i) Mechanical way, by providing an anchor for the coating; and
(ii) Chemical way, by allowing intimate contact of coating material molecules with the steel (or other material) surface.

Clean surface Surface Profile

  1. How to get a good surface profile?
    • Select good quality abrasives is key.
    • Select abrasives with right grain shape (typically angular shapes) to ensure good cleaning rate (blast efficiency) and of correct mesh size to get the required surface profile for that coating.

  1. How to get a good surface cleanliness?
    • Select good quality abrasives is key.
    • Select abrasives with low total Chloride content and low Conductivity to ensure the cleanliness of the blasted surface.
